How to make LUSH ‘Angels on Bare Skin’ Natural Cleanser
Hi, I’m Tanya from Lovely Greens, and today I’d like to show you how to make my version of Lush’s Angels on Bare Skin.
A Soapless Cleanser
It’s a soapless cleanser made of Kaolin clay, which draws impurities and oil from the skin; ground almonds for mild exfoliation; and lavender buds, which also give a little bit of exfoliation but also decoration and natural fragrance. We’ll also use two essential oils, which are rose geranium essential oil and lavender essential oil, both of which are great at helping to balance the oil production in your skin. We’ll also use rose water, which is the natural toner, and for moisture and natural glide in the product, we’ll be using vegetable glycerin.
Ingredients Assembled
So now that you have all of your ingredients assembled, it’s time to make your cleanser.
Dry Ingredients
First, start with your dry ingredients: your Kaolin clay and ground almonds. So this is 20 g of Kaolin clay and 25 g of ground almonds. Place them into your bowl. Now give that a little bit of a mix.
Vegetable Glycerin and Rose Water
Next, we’ll add our vegetable glycerin. There’s 13 g of vegetable glycerin in this recipe, and I use grams and weights as opposed to volume because it’s much more accurate when making beauty products. Get as much as you can out of the bowl if you’ve pre-measured. Right now, stir that until it’s well incorporated. Next, we’ll add our rose water. There’ll be 25 drops of this; that’s approximately 25 drops. Give the mix a little stir.
Essential Oils
And the last ingredients we’ll add to the mix will be the essential oils. We’ll have three drops of rose geranium essential oil and we’ll have four drops of lavender essential oil. Now, lavender essential oil and rose geranium essential oil are great at balancing the skin’s oil production, and I mentioned that already, but lavender essential oil is also a healing oil, so it’s great for if you have blemishes or very sensitive skin. Now mix that really, really well so that you get the essential oils and rose water spread throughout, and that’s finished.
Your mixture may look like this; it could be a little bit more crumbly as well at this point. And you can also just seal it in a sealable container if you’d like, if you prefer, rather than continuing on to the rolling process, which we’ll go through next.
Rolling the Cleanser into a Log
So what I’m going to do now is roll the cleanser into a little log. We’ll start first by bringing a sheet of greaseproof paper. Place it in front of you and just scoop the mixture out into the center. Now, rolling the cleanser into a log helps do two things: first, it’ll make it easier to store, and second of all, it’ll make it a lot easier to break off a piece that you need. Now, this recipe is good for making 60 g of product, and that’s good for anywhere between one to two weeks of use, depending on the size that you need. And now we’ll take our lavender buds, and this is, you remember, for decoration and a little bit extra exfoliation. Roll that on that as well. Just continue rolling, pressing into the greaseproof paper. This cleanser is actually also good for up to three months, and that’s because there’s very little water content—just a little bit from the rose water—but I doubt that you’ll actually have this more than a week or two, as I just said. So here you have it; here’s your little log. It’s about 2 and 1/2 inches long, 2 inches. So what we’ll just do now is take that and place it into a sealable container like so. Well, there you have it; you’ve got your product. It’s all ready to go.
How to Use the Cleanser
So what do you do with it? How do you use it? A lot of you may be unfamiliar with this cleanser, the original cleanser, and you may be poking at it thinking it’s a bit dry. What do I do with it? Well, I’m going to show you what to do. First, I need a little bit of water, and you’ll take about this much, maybe a little bit more. This is what I use. Add a little bit of water to that, and you want to form a paste, a milky paste, in the palm of your hand. What this is doing is it’s making it a lot easier for you to spread on your skin. The milkiness comes from the Kaolin clay, which on your skin will help to pull out impurities and cleanse it. Right, I’m not going to put this on my face, but I’ll leave it on my hands and I’ll show you what happens. So at this point, you’re massaging it into your face, putting it on the skin on your face, and the ground almonds are actually lightly, very lightly, exfoliating your skin. It smells really nice as well. Now, when you’re finished, you just rinse in water and you’re finished. This is a soapless cleanser as well, so if you’re familiar with using soap-based cleansers, you’ll know you’ll get this tight feeling in your skin afterwards. Well, this won’t leave that feeling at all, so it’s particularly great for people with dry skin and sensitive skin.
Sourcing Ingredients
Now, as far as ingredients are concerned, you can get ingredients from your local kitchen supply shop or grocery store. There are also other online retailers as well, as well as specialty cosmetics suppliers. So have a look online and good luck with making it. Thanks very much. Bye.
